What exactly is 3D mesh?
3D mesh is a three-dimensionally woven textile fabric that originally comes from the sports and seating furniture sector – where it ensures breathability and comfort. The special feature: Instead of a flat, two-dimensional fabric, 3D mesh consists of two outer layers connected by countless fine support threads. This creates an airy, springy structure with its own volume.
What makes the fabric so suitable for a handmade bag is precisely this independence. A GERLINA bag requires no additional stiffening, no inner adhesive, and no padding – the material stands on its own.
Three qualities that matter in everyday life
Lightness
A GERLINA handbag in size Medium weighs around 200 grams – that's less than a bar of chocolate. In comparison: A classic leather handbag of the same size can quickly weigh 600 to 900 grams. Once you feel the difference of carrying it throughout the day, you won't want to go back.
Breathability
Thanks to the airy mesh structure, nothing gets trapped inside the bag – neither heat nor moisture. This is pleasant in summer, but particularly relevant if you're carrying sports clothing, a water bottle, or damp laundry. Dimensional stability
Even after being crumpled in a travel bag, the mesh quickly regains its shape. You don't have to stuff or iron your bag – it stands upright. Even when empty.
The Swiss aspect
Every GERLINA bag is handmade in our atelier in Menziken in the canton of Aargau. The 3D mesh is cut, then processed in several steps on the sewing machine, fitted with carrying straps, and finally checked with Swiss diligence.
What this means in practice: no mass production, no overseas delivery times, no hidden materials. You can always ask which colors were combined, how long your carrying strap should be, or exactly when your bag will be ready. For a custom order, this usually takes two to three weeks.
Reversible – one look becomes two
A special feature of the GERLINA construction: Every bag is reversible. Inside and out are made from the same mesh material, and both sides are neatly finished. You choose your favorite combination from ten available colors for both the inside and outside – and decide in the morning which side suits you best.
For example: A muted grey on the outside for the office day, a vibrant orange on the inside for an evening aperitif. One bag, two looks, no effort to switch.
How do you care for a 3D mesh bag?
